With Offset by her side on stage, Cardi accepted the gold trophy for her debut LP Invasion of PRivacy.

You may be thinking: “Wait, didn’t Lauryn Hill do that already?” Well, not quite. Hill took home the award as 1/3 of the Fugees when the super group won Best Rap Album in 1997; However, Cardi stamps history as the first woman to win it as a solo artist.

“I want to thank my daughter,” Cardi expressed during the speech. “I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. It’s because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete, like three songs that I was for sure having. And then you know, you know how it was, we was like, we have to get this album done so I could still do videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.”

Cardi faced some stiff competition for the honor including Travis Scott, Pusha T, Nipsey Hussle, and the late Mac Miller.

In the midst of the majestic night, Offset too hinted at the arrival of his own solo album, premiering a trailer via social media that consisted of a snippet of Cardi giving birth to Kulture, the pair’s daughter.
