Waymo | Google’s Self-Driving Car | Almost Ready To Launch!

New York, NY – Humans are evolving, rapidly and astronomically. As the intelligence level of human beings continues to grow to unimagined heights, we all figured most likely that one day in the future, humans would possess vehicles that drove themselves. Well that future has become present day, as Google is spinning out their self-driving car project, in a newly launched company called Waymo.

At a press conference held earlier today, Waymo executives stated, “Our mission is to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around”. Waymo, which stands for “Way forward in mobility,” is Google’s self-driving technology. Waymo is solely focused on the tech side of things, not on cars presently. The business will be looking to partner with vehicle manufacturers, rather than constructing their own automobiles.

Waymo’s self-driving technology is close to ready but no cigar just yet, as cars will continue to be piloted by humans, with Waymo’s self-driving technology included as a feature. Waymo says there’s a lot of work to do still, like building better maps, improving navigation in inclement conditions, and making the ride smoother. The company is presently in the build phase, of putting next gen sensor load outs in the Chrysler Pacifica, which it will be utilizing in a 100-car pilot project in partnership with Fiat Chrysler. “We’re getting close. We’re getting ready, and we want to tell the world about it,” CEO John Krafcik spoke at the conference.

In 2015, The Google division completed its first fully self-driving ride on public roads in Austin, placing a blind passenger in the front seat of a steering-wheel-less car. Due to regulations, Krafcik noted that the “fully driver-less” system the company builds may come with a steering wheel and brake pedals for now. Unanswered questions about insurance and liability, as well as regulatory issues, are considered some of the major obstacles to the future of self-driving cars.

We can’t wait for Waymo’s technology to self-drive our cars for us, that way we can drink iced coffee and watch The View while on the way to work in the morning! Thanks again Google.
